Why Dads
Let’s be real. Dads are in this too. We also struggle.
Common Struggles:
Not reaching out for support and help
Difficulty expressing how we feel
Not talking to other dads about real issues in our lives
Doing things alone
Feelings of guilt and shame
Quick to anger
Substance and alcohol use
When I first became a dad, I noticed my wife would consistently make friends with other moms she would meet at various events, parks, play dates, etc. I didn’t see any dads doing this.
Dads tend to suffer in silence. We feel we have to wear the “masks” of fatherhood always. These masks/roles can translate to
The Provider
My value is based on what I produce
Guilt when not being productive
Sacrifice their own needs
The Stoic
The “rock” of the family
Avoids vulnerability
Emotions may feel weak or unsafe
The Fixer
My job is to solve problems
Solution focused instead of listening
The Lone Wolf
I shouldn’t need anybody
Avoids deep male friendships
Deals with stress alone
The Fun Dad
Leans into play, wrestling, humor
My value is tied to the energy I bring
I have heard this story from countless dads. These '“masks” are not inherently bad but if they never come off, problems can arise: depression, anxiety, anger, substance use, shame, etc.
